Here’s a great article by Wendy Jacobs stressing the importance of Positive Child Discipline
Parents need to learn positive child discipline, children deserves to be treated with respect, even when they are misbehaving. Studies show that children who are raised with spankings are less likely to learn right from wrong, and are more likely to misbehave behind their parent’s backs.
If we want our children to make wise decisions when they deal with problems, then we must use positive child discipline to teach them. Children need help learning good behavior. How do you know if a discipline method has worked? One way to judge is, has the child learned from this method?. If a child is doing more of the right things and fewer of the wrong things, it is working!
Positive child discipline also changes the way children feel about themselves. Sometimes people think that the purpose of discipline is to get children to do the right thing right now. The purpose of discipline is to raise responsible, confident children. We want our children to grow up to think for themselves, to learn acceptable behaviors, and to make wise decisions when they deal with problems.
There are several ways to use positive child discipline. First thing is to try and understand our children and what to expect from them. Know what is normal. This will help parents to provide for their children’s needs. When children needs met they are less likely to misbehave.
Positive child discipline involves showing your children the right behavior by doing it yourself. Children learn by watching how adults behave. So it is important behave appropriately. If the adults do not eat vegetables, it will be hard to get the children to eat them. If the adults smoke, the children might try to smoke.
Rewarding your child for good behavior is excellent positive child discipline. Children need to know when they doing the right thing. A reward does not need to be a present. Parents can say something nice, like “I like the way you did that” or “I am proud of you”. Parents can give a hug or a smile or praise their child in front of others to reward him.
Sometimes finding positive child discipline methods can be difficult. Sometimes it just seems like they want to be bad. Understanding why children misbehave is important. You need to figure out the reason for your child’s misbehavior by looking for patterns in their child’s behavior. Is your child tired, bored, sick or are they seeking attention. We need to figure out what our children need.
Positive child discipline is used teach the child what is wrong and what is right. Sometimes you cannot prevent wrong behavior. Teach your children the connection between their actions and the results of their misbehavior. You can use logical and natural consequences to do that. Natural consequences are what naturally happen after a child’s behavior. Logical consequences are techniques the adult manages,

Great article post. Sometimes parents, like myself, feel overwhelmed when our children act out in ways we don’t understand. Trying to view and understand where their behavior may be coming from can go a long in building a healthy child and also a healthy bond between parent and child.
